Village Vaccination Program to Date
The Village’s first two vaccination clinics, which took place on the weekends of January 22 and 29, have so far been a success, while adjustments have been made where necessary to make the events run as smoothly as possible.
To date, close to 5,000 residents 75 and older have received their first of two COVID-19 vaccination injections, and more are slated to receive their first dose on Friday, February 5, and Saturday, February 6. (Note: There will be no clinic at Clubhouse 7 on Sunday, February 7.)
As we continue with the Village Vaccination Program, let’s offer a collective, heartfelt thank you to MemorialCare Medical Group. Without its team of volunteer doctors, nurses, executive and administrative staff who have generously donated all services to VMS and have worked these weekends tirelessly for residents, none of this would be possible.
Ongoing program success depends entirely on future COVID-19 vaccine dose allocations from the Orange County Health Care Agency, which isn’t able to notify MemorialCare of additional doses until Wednesday each week.
MemorialCare and VMS want to ensure no vaccines go to waste. Once the vaccines are thawed and prepared, they have an approximate eight-hour life. If the appointment line experiences a lull (missed appointments, etc.), VMS does take residents from the walk-up line so that those vaccines aren’t wasted. However, these folks understand there’s no guarantee of vaccination that day. Most wait in line for quite some time; others are asked to return another day. However, the randomly selected queue by age remains the priority.
The community has shown a wonderfully generous outpouring of support for MemorialCare volunteers and the vaccination effort by donating wheelchairs and walkers; making homemade goodies and offering fresh fruit, donuts and chocolate; delivering piping-hot pizza; and offering considerable monetary donations for the Foundation of Laguna Woods, which is supporting MemorialCare volunteers with lunches.
