Is It Flu, Cold or COVID?
As flu season approaches, be aware of the typical symptoms you may experience with the common cold, flu and COVID-19. This list is not exhaustive, and other symptoms may be present or overlapping. If you have questions about any of the following symptoms, be sure to bring them up with your doctor.
- Runny or stuffy nose
- Sneezing
- Sore throat
- Mild to moderate chest discomfort
Flu viruses can cause mild to severe illness. Getting an annual flu vaccine is an important preventative measure to help protect against influenza this season.
- Fever or chills
- Cough
- Sore throat
- Body aches
COVID-19 seems to cause more serious illnesses in some people. Also, some people may be able to spread COVID-19 without showing any symptoms.
- Fever or chills
- Cough
- New loss of taste or smell
- Shortness of breath
Both flu and COVID-19 can have varying degrees of signs and symptoms, ranging from no symptoms (asymptomatic) to severe symptoms. Common symptoms that COVID-19 and flu share include:
- Fever or feeling feverish/chills
- Cough
- Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing
- Fatigue (tiredness)
- Sore throat
- Runny or stuffy nose
- Muscle pain or body aches
- Headache
- Some people may have vomiting and diarrhea, though this is more common in children than adults
