First place winner - Joan Ross
A picture in my mind teases,
As I reach out
It changes, slips away.
A small brown-eyed girl
Plays with a little white dog
A woman wearing a fur boa
Calls for her supper.
George Washington frowns
Above the blackboard--
The child watches
The clock's hands,
Prays for the bell,
Sneaks a wave
To the woman
Outside, waiting.
Hiding under blankets
With her flashlight
The little girl quietly
Sobs at the story's ending,
Finds herself being rocked
In the woman's arms.
What was the story? The Yearling?
Black Beauty?
Who is the child?
The woman?
They look familiar.
Second Place Winner - Jerry Engel
Shortly after I arrived in Laguna Woods, I wandered into a gym where I watched people exercise. I splashed water on my face, so it looked like I was sweating. I was admiring my fat body in a mirror when I noticed a beautiful image smiling at me. We began to talk and I asked her out to lunch even though I'm a sloppy eater. She said she'd meet me the next day.
My heart overflowed with joy when she entered the gym. But she was with a gorilla named Oscar who was her husband. Some things never change.
