Residents are saying:

City of Laguna Woods Offers Green Home Certification

City of Laguna Woods Offers Green Home Certification
The purpose of the Laguna Woods Green Home Program is to encourage residents to incorporate sustainable appliances and building practices into their homes and thereby promoting the environmental health of the community.

The Laguna Woods Green Home program is a voluntary program that is available for all residential units – existing or new. The program is specifically designed to meet the unique circumstances found in multifamily developments.

The process to achieve “Green Certification” involves two parts:

Part 1 – Application/Checklist
Residents should compete the Laguna Woods Green Home Applications and scoring checklist (available at City Hall), identifying the items which have been incorporated in their home. All Green Home Certifications must use the City’s application and scoring chart.

Level 1 certification requires the applicant to submit documentation (sales receipts and/or pictures) for most items; some items may be self-certified by signing the application. The checklist has * where documentation is required.

Levels 2 and 3 certifications require a site inspection; documentation will be required for items that cannot be visibly certified by the inspector. For example, use of carpet made of recyclable material and water based paint would require paper documentation, such as the sales slips.

Part 2 – Building Department Review
A complete application, together with scoring checklist and any required documentation should be submitted to the City of Laguna Woods Building Department.

Level 1 certification does not require a building inspection; certification stickers will be awarded upon review of the application and documentation. There is no application fee for Level 1 certification.

Level 2 and 3 certification requires an on-site inspection by City of Laguna Woods Building Department Staff. There is a $25 application fee for these levels, which must accompany the application. The fee is non-refundable; however, staff will make up to two site visits if required to verify information on the application.

Homes deemed to be “Green Certified” achieve points based on the attached scoring chart, upon review and tabulation by the City of Laguna Woods Building Department.

To receive certification, a home must meet at least two practices in each of the following categories:

1)     Energy Use Reduction
2)     Water Use Reduction
3)     Air Quality Improvement
4)     Waste Reduction

The required practices must be identified on the application form.

After determining that requirements in each category were met, the Certification level will be based upon the following point scale:

  1. 60 – 109 Points: Laguna Woods Green Home
  2. 110 – 154 Points: Laguna Woods Green Star Home
  3. 155 – 195 Points: Laguna Woods Green Star Plus Home
Applications and information packets are available at Laguna Woods City Hall, 24264 El Toro Road, Laguna Woods, CA 92637 and on the City’s website www.laguanwoodscity.org. If you have any questions about the voluntary Green Homes Program or need further assistance, please contact the Deputy Building Official at (949) 639-0527 or ggates@lagunwoodscity.org.
