Sheep, Goats Help Restore Natural Habitat in Laguna Canyon
Sheep, Goats Help Restore Natural Habitat in Laguna Canyon To prevent area brush fires, The Irvine Company is using about 500 sheep as part of a targeted grazing program to clear invasive, non-native plants and undergrowth that feeds wildfires. Sheep will begin grazing on a 105-acre portion of eastern Laguna Canyon for three weeks starting March 3rd. The method is approved by the California Department of Fish and Game and is an alternative to clearing with bulldozers, controlled burning or chemicals. The sheep that are grazing in March eat green grasses and mustard plants that proliferate after the winter rains. Those invasive plants compete with native plants for water and nutrients. By the time summer comes round, those green grasses and mustard plants dry out and die, becoming potential fuel for fires. The sheep help reduce the number of those plants before they can die out. The same shepherd and flock being deployed near Laguna Woods Village also is used in and around Laguna Beach specifically to eliminate vegetation that could become fuel for fires. The goats that are set to come in during the fall also play a big role in reducing fire risk. Unlike sheep, which are “a little fussy,” goats “will eat anything,” said Paul Galvin, a biologist with Irvine’s Harmsworth Associates who is overseeing the project. “Along with live plants, goats eat dead vegetation, which is most prone to burning in a fire.” And the Irvine Company isn’t the only organization readying for wildfires. Over the past couple of years, PCM has worked with the Orange County Fire Authority to cut back the vegetation growing in areas close the western perimeter of the Village. “After working closely with the OCFA, we have maintained the lower cover into this year,” said Kurt Rahn, Landscaping Director at PCM. Katy Howe, Maintenance Administrative Services Manager, will be speaking to the Community Associations Institute in April about structural fire prevention in homeowner associations. She will give examples of proactive fire-prevention programs at the Village, such as Third Mutual’s 81-building, three-year fire alarm replacement program, or Mutual Fifty’s plan to install 10-year lithium battery smoke alarms in all of the units at the Towers. Working together and being proactive in taking steps to prevent fires is the best way to ensure a non-eventful fire season. You can do your part by installing a fire alarm in every bedroom in your home, and checking them frequently to make sure the batteries are still good. About the Irvine Company Founded in 1864, the Irvine Company is an internationally renowned real estate development company known for its award-winning master-planned communities, its vast portfolio of high-quality investment properties, and its leadership in conservation and natural resource management. The growing real estate portfolio encompasses office, apartment, retail and resort holdings located throughout California’s premier markets, including assets in San Diego, Orange and Los Angeles counties, and holdings in Northern California. As a steward of some of America’s most beautiful and scientifically important open space and parklands, the company has donated to Orange County more than half of the historic 93,000-acre Irvine Ranch in Orange County—50,000 acres—to permanently preserve these lands. The U.S. Department of Interior and the State of California have designated these parklands as “Natural Landmarks,” one of the most prestigious land preservation designations. The privately held, diversified company traces its roots to the 1860s with the formation of The Irvine Ranch® from Mexican and Spanish land grants. |
