Love is in the air this February in Laguna Woods Village! In this edition of My Village News, we share one of the inspiring love stories we received from residents who responded to our Operation Cupid campaign. In addition, the Orange County Register reports good news in the Laguna Woods housing market. Also in this issue, General Manager Jerry Storage offers essential theft prevention tips to keep your valuables safe and GRF invites you to check out the Equestrian Center and all that it has to offer!

Operation Cupid in full bloom!
One story illustrates how it’s never too late to find love.
"Jim was widowed after 63 years of marriage in 2008 and I (Ilona) was widowed ten days after 9/11 on 9/21/01.
Initially, we both had to process our deep losses for quite some time and then 'loneliness' set in. After much consideration we, each, considered the online possibility of meeting someone special. And we did! We met 'on the internet' and found many, many similar interests and found that we had many similar personal and professional experiences as well.
We finally met in person after an extensive correspondence and many telephone conversations - and we really 'hit it off'! We feel so fortunate that at our age (87 and 82) we have found an ideal friendship, partnership and romance again. We were married on 5/28/11 in the presence of our combined number of children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren and still feel like newlyweds!"

Orange County Register reports Laguna Woods home market speeds up
Jonathan Lanser of the Orange County Register reports that homes in Laguna Woods sell 37 percent quicker than the pace of the rest of Orange County. Furthermore only 8.1 percent of the homes listed for sale in Laguna Woods were distressed properties, compared to 38.7 percent countywide and is the third lowest percentage of distressed properties among all communities in the county.

Free Tax Help offered through April 11
The free tax help is offered Mondays at Florence Sylvester Memorial Senior Center in Moulton Plaza on Moulton Parkway at Santa Maria and on Wednesdays in the Laguna Woods Village Community Center, 24351 El Toro Road.
For appointments at both venues, call the Senior Center at 949-380-0155.
Ongoing Projects in the Community
Did you know that ongoing maintenance projects in the Community are posted on the website under Community News? Here’s a small selection of projects underway in GRF:
Library and Historical Society Renovation: The Library and Historical Society renovation is underway and scheduled until early April 2012. During construction residents should keep any checked out books and return them to the Library after the renovation is complete.
Gate 1 Renovation: The contract has been awarded for an architect to complete the construction documents for the Gate 1 renovation. Improvements include a new gatehouse, reconfiguring the entryway for improved security and traffic flow, new parking area, new signage and wall treatment, and additional security cameras.

Ask Jerry - What are some of the better theft prevention techniques at Laguna Woods Village?
Laguna Woods Village is one of the safer communities in the state, but that doesn’t mean that residents are immune from petty crimes like theft. Gene Hart, Security Director, recently spoke to some of the Boards about some best practices regarding residential and auto theft prevention in the Village. I would like to take this opportunity to reiterate the important tips Gene shared:

Some smart tips to follow to discourage residential theft are:
- Identify your personal property by engraving your driver’s license number on each item of value.
- Do not store valuable property or any spare keys in your carport storage.
- Do not leave spare keys under your doormat, mailbox, or in common sense hiding places.
Some smart tips to follow to discourage auto theft are:
- Don’t leave any valuables in plain view.
- Never leave you car running, even if you will only be gone for a minute.
- Don’t leave the car registration or title in your car. A thief will use those to sell your car. File the title and registration in your home or safety deposit box and carry a copy of the registration in your purse or wallet.
- Cover the VIN number (vehicle registration number) so it isn’t visible from the outside of your car. The number can be used to have a duplicate set of keys cut.
- Drop home address labels, business, cards or other forms of ID inside the doors of your car. Car thieves usually alter the VIN number. By marking your vehicle as much as possible, you assist police in identifying your car.
Be safe and be vigilant. Personal well-being means everything...and security is everyone's responsibility. Please notify Security of any security-related incidents in the community at (949) 580-1400.

The Four Lads featured at Champagne Pops Series on February 25
The Four Lads, who have been providing musical “Moments to Remember” since 1950 will headline the Champagne Pops Series at 7 p.m., Sat., Feb. 25.
The Lads launched their professional career in 1950 singing in local cubs around Toronto. They were noticed by local scouts and recruited to perform at New Your City’s posh dinner club, Le Ruban Bleu. There, Mitch Miller saw them and signed them to sing backup on the million-selling Johnnie Ray records "Cry" and "The Little White Cloud That Cried."
They went on to have a strong run of hits including "Istanbul (not Constantinople)," "Moments to Remember," "Standin’ on the Corner," "No Not Much," and "Who Needs You."
More than fifty years later, the Lads’ unique style captures hearts and brings back many a memory.

The Equestrian Center has much to offer residents!
Whether you’ve an experienced buckaroo or planning for your first time on horseback, you should take advantage of the Laguna Woods Village Equestrian Center. You’re never too old to learn to ride, and the professional staff at the Equestrian Center will help you get in the saddle.
The Equestrian Center provides horses, guided trail rides and instruction. Special events, including horsemanship camps, horse shows, and cookouts are scheduled throughout the year.
Residents and their guests are welcome to ride at the Equestrian Center. Please make reservations by calling 597-4275.

Congratulations to the three Laguna Woods Village staff members who took home prestigious Community Associations Institute awards
Several Laguna Woods Village staff members were honored at the Community Associations Institute (CAI) Orange County Regional Chapter Excellence in Community Awards Dinner on Feb. 3.
A trio of PCM staffers who work at Laguna Woods Village – General Manager Jerry Storage, Towers Director Judie Zoerhof and Government and Governmental and Public Affairs Manager Wendy Bucknum – took home prestigious CAI awards at the annual industry event which recognizes CAI members’ contributions to the homeowner associations industry.
"I feel incredibly privileged to work in the Laguna Woods Community and very proud of my team," said Storage, a 15-year property management industry veteran. "To me, success is measured by how well we preserve and protect the residents’ investment in their community."

Conservation Corner
Recycling can be confusing: Can I recycle old telephone books in the blue bins? (Yes!) Can I recycle an old area rug in the blue bins? (No!)
The City of Laguna Woods has created a new flyer to help demystify the do’s and don’ts of recycling in the blue bins. The flyer also includes monthly dates for free collection of clean-up items on page one, which is a great way to get rid of that old area rug you can’t recycle!
Clean-up items include appliances, furniture, e-waste, tires, tree branches, and yard clean-up waste. Toxic, hazardous or liquid waste will not be collected.
