Can a member replace a circuit breaker with a larger one to prevent tripping of the circuits? Webmaster No. The replacement of a smaller breaker to a larger breaker cannot be done as each breaker is calculated to handle the specific line load for outlets or lighting circuit. By increasing the size of the breaker without changing the wire size (gauge), the existing circuitry will be compromised, potentially causing a fire hazard. Anytime a breaker is upsized, the existing wire gauge must also be increased to address line load requirements. Also this change must be permitted by City of Laguna Woods Building Officials to ensure electrical code requirements are satisfied. It is best to call a certified electrician when adding or changing a circuit breaker, and all such work will require a permit. |
